Michigan NCT Day 24: Lake Road to the Wisconsin-Michigan Border

Today’s goal was hiking to the Wisconsin-Michigan border, and then the last few miles of the NCT-Wisconsin down to Hwy. 2. Since I was out late yesterday, I let myself sleep in. Around 9 a.m., the owner of an Ironwood, Mich., AirBnB that Ed and I had stayed at in January met me at Hwy. 2 to shuttle me back to the spot where I’d left off yesterday.

I had about 22 miles (35.4 km) of road walking today. Luckily, the day was sunny, with highs of about 77 F. (25 C.) and a light wind. So it was pretty perfect for hiking. Fortunately, the traffic on the roads was relatively light.

Pushing Toward the Wisconsin-Michigan Border

The first few miles of the road walk were pleasant, but nothing outstanding. However, the scenery improved with each mile. As I neared Lake Superior, the road passed Gogebic County Forest. I’m curious why there is no trail through this forest. Oh, and in case you need to know, “Gogebic” is pronounced Go GEB ick. 

Shortly before you reach the lake, you enter Little Girl’s Point, a pretty spot on Lake Superior. It appears to be a locale comprised of vacation homes and a campground. I ate lunch at a picnic table in the campground.

Heading out of town, I saw a vacation home with a sign that read, “Hoynacke, Truskowski.” One of my sister-in-laws is married to a Truskowski, not a common surname. I took a photo of it and sent it to her. Turns out it’s her hubby’s brother’s place! 

Day Is Done

I’m back in the AmericInn in Ironwood, a lovely motel. This portion of my NCT section hike didn’t go as planned, but no hikes do. And while I still mourn my car’s demise, it’s only an object.
