Hiking is becoming so popular. Today, it seems as though everyone is hitting the trails, especially long-distance ones such as the Superior Hiking Trail. In fact, hiking is surging in popularity not only across the U.S., but all around the world.
Experts aren’t positive why this is happening. But they believe one reason is the popularity of the book “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. “Wild” debuted in 2012. A few years later, the book was turned into a movie starring Reese Witherspoon. And it was right around this time that people began lacing up their boots in earnest.
Another Reason Hiking Is Becoming So Popular
But “Wild” isn’t the only reason hiking is taking the world by storm. While there is no definitive research on the topic, many trail folks believe Millennials are also driving the hiking boom. Millennials are known to prefer experiences over things, hence their affinity for hiking around the world versus, say, buying a house.
In addition, being out in nature is good for the mind and body. Studies have shown this for years, and more and more people are taking wellness to heart. Think of the popularity of mindfulness practices, for example, positive affirmations and the importance of gratitude.
We’ll see if hiking remains hot. I sure hope so, as long as we can still take care of our wilderness areas. That will be the trickiest part. For you can love some things to death.
One of my favorite types of hiking shoes: Hokas. They’re very cushy and durable, plus come in fun colors and designs.
