Hiking is becoming so popular. It seems everyone is hiking these days, especially on long-distance trails such as the Superior Hiking Trail. In fact, hiking is surging in popularity not only across the U.S., but all around the world.
Experts aren’t positive why this is happening. But they believe one reason is the popularity of the book “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. “Wild” debuted in 2012. A few years later, “Wild” became a movie starring Reese Witherspoon. And it was right around this time that people began lacing up their boots in earnest.
Another Reason Hiking Is Becoming So Popular
But “Wild” isn’t the only reason hiking is taking the world by storm. While there is no definitive research on the topic, many trail folks believe Millennials are also driving the hiking boom. Millennials are known to prefer experiences over things, here their affinity for hiking around the world versus, say, buying a house.
We’ll see if hiking remains hot. I sure hope so, as long as we can still take care of our wilderness areas. That will be the trickiest part. For you can love some things to death.
