Today’s forecast called for storms around 2:30 p.m. So we got up early and got on the trail by 7:30 a.m. in the hopes of finishing before then. The first piece of trail was tackled was nasty. It was filled with downed trees once again, plus scrub that was difficult to navigate around. At one point, the trail and all markings disappeared. Thankfully, we got back on track.

Making Our Way to Tappan Lake

The next stretch was a road walk, during which we ran into two women hiking in the opposite direction. They warned us that the next section up for us also had many downed trees. We told them, “Ditto,” for the trail they would next encounter. But these ladies had already done that piece; one said, “It’s been untended like that for years.”

Bruce and I couldn’t even find the start of the trail, but we COULD see a massive amount of downed trees within. Since this was a short piece (less than one Man crawling under downed tree.mile) and it paralleled the road, we stayed on the road.

Our final stretch for the day (ending at Tappan Lake) was pretty decent until the last mile, when the downed trees blocked the path once again. But we called it a win, since we’d enjoyed several lovely miles. The spring wildflowers are in full bloom and are lovely. Ed even met us and handed out mint chocolate chip ice cream cups!
