Wet, rutted road
Since we camped at the trailhead last night, we left one car there and drove to Pretty Run / Macedonia Church. Byron Guy met us there, who is the Old Man’s Cave section supervisor. He showed us where we could camp at night and other things. Then we started off, hiking backwards/westbound toward Ed’s car.

Heading Out from Pretty Run

We thought we had a lot of time on roads today, which would give us more time to set up camp tonight and hang out with our friends Amy and Bruce Eckert, who were driving from Michigan to join us tonight. But a bunch of the “roads” on the FarOut app were really ATV-type trails. Since there’s been a lot of rain here lately, these roads had deep gullies in the middle and often were wet and muddy. Many had running water flowing down them.

All this to say the going was slow once again. Much slower than we’d anticipated.

Picking Our Way Through the Woods

We eventually got back into the woods, which was nice. But, again, due to the storms, there were a lot of downed trees here. Grooved trail roadWe soldiered on. That’s all you can do, right?

Toward the end of the day, we had a long uphill on a gravel road. But we made it to the car, then drove to the Pretty Run camping area. The Eckerts had arrived before we did, and they had already set up camp. We had a great night with them and are excited for tomorrow.
