Lake on a mountaintop
Theresa once again shuttled me, this time to the Rabbit Ears Trailhead. (BTW, she has family in Mt. Horeb, which is near me!) I was sad heading out without Ed, but I’m also on the home stretch for this year’s hike.

The morning went exceptionally well. There were just a few short, steep sections; most of it was flat or gentle rollers. The trail was also nice, packed dirt. I passed many pretty lakes.

Heading to Buffalo Pass

The afternoon got a bit more challenging, but just a little. The trail became rockier, but not too bad. There was a short period of rain, so I had to dig out my pack cover, rain skirt, etc. But it never got heavy, thank goodness.

There will be a 50-mile and 100-mile race along this trail on Saturday, so people were out marking the course with different colored ribbons and putting up signs. Luckily the end (or start?) is at Summit Campground, so I won’t be in the runners’ way on Saturday.

Dreary End to the Day

The sky had been sunny all morning, but once the rain came it became mostly cloudy and Tent by a lakedreary out. I made it to Summit Campground/Buffalo Pass in good time. I’m glad to have a picnic table, although the tenting spaces are kind of slanty. There is also supposedly bear activity in the area, and you’re supposed to keep your food in your vehicle. Uh … what about backpackers? I sure hope my bear bag will be sufficient.
