Patio on a river.
So what, exactly, ended up happening yesterday – Friday the 13th! – before I was safe in Abiquiu? The couple helping me finally got Liz on the phone, who said she was at a college in a nearby town. What the heck?! It was 5 p.m., and Liz knew she had my stuff. Why would she go to a college in a nearby town?! The story got crazier.

The couple and Liz agreed to meet on this road to exchange me; Liz would then take me to Abiquiu. But she wasn’t on the road. When we reached her again on the phone, she was now on the opposite side of the mountain. Again, what the heck?! So she said they should drop me off at the college (where she no longer was), and she’d arrive there in 45 minutes and take me back to her camp. NO! I did not want to stay at her camp. For all I knew, she’d turn into Kathy Bates.

Longing for Abiquiu

As I wrote yesterday, the couple ended up driving me to Abiquiu and Bode’s, a local store. Liz did bring me my stuff. But she marched into Bode’s, gave me an angry look, and said, “I’ve been looking for you ALL DAY! This is my third trip into town!”

Uh, lady, I told you I would be hiking the CDT all day! You were supposed to meet me with me stuff on the trail in the mountains – the mountains you said you knew so well, you could find me anywhere. Why were you looking for me in town?! Why were you looking for me before the end of the day, when I said I’d be hiking all day?! Oh well, it ended O.K.

Relaxing in Abiquiu

There were maybe a dozen people at Goldie’s, this little hostel-type place for hikers and cyclists on the Great Divide Trail. They were very welcoming. I showered in this M*A*S*H*-type outdoor shower and joined the gang for drinks, relaxation and good chats.

Today most of the cyclists have left, save four. They went into town early while I did laundry and other tasks. I walked into town before noon, indulging in Bode’s famous green chile cheeseburger. Then I walked farther to the Abiquiu Inn, where there was strong wifi and cell service.

I probably should have looked at some of the Georgia O’Keeffe exhibits (she lived in Abiquiu), but I did not. Georgia was born in Sun Prairie, my current home, and always trashed the city and our wonderful state. So I skipped it. (I’m also not a fan of her work, so there!)

Catching Up on Stuff

I stayed several hours at the inn, posting trail journal entries, reading emails and calling home. Then I slowly walked back to Goldie’s (it was very hot out).

Tonight everyone’s preparing to leave tomorrow, but also chilling. We’re all heading to Cuba, although the cyclists will get there two Man getting a haircut outside.days before me.

I’m nervous because tomorrow the first water source is 15 miles (24.1 km) away, but it’s also a super muddy river. Everyone says to pre-filter the water so as not to ruin your water filter.

I haven’t successfully pre-filtered water before. I tried twice, using a bandanna and a coffee filter, but both times the items simply absorbed the water. So I have no idea what will happen.

Hopefully just four more days on the CDT this year!
