Last night I heard coyotes, both at night and in the early morning. I love hearing them! Woke up with the sun and was on the trail by 8 a.m.
The early miles were pretty good – well maintained, no logs to navigate, etc. Met a hiker named Will and a young couple from Germany, I believe. Will had gone through a lot of the hail and rain of the last few weeks, so we commiserated.

Heading Toward the Pasture
I can’t really say the trail became difficult later on. There were some places where it disappeared and I was going the wrong way, times when it was rocky and slowed me down, and times when it sprinkled.
I could have completed the 19.1 miles (30.7 km) on my itinerary, but I opted to stop less than 2 miles (3.2 km) from my goal. I was going uphill and getting tired, spotted a nice campsite under a pine tree, and promptly decided to pull over.
While water awaits just up the trail, hiking another hour would have meant setting up camp and eating in cool temps. I’m writing this sitting outside my tent, under the tree, which is really nice.
No service all day today. Boo.
