I’d planned the next few days’ hiking with Ed, from Wolf Creek Pass, assuming 17-milers (27.4 km) would be easy days for us. But not with this trail.
Thanks to another great trail angel / shuttler, Kelly, we got to Wolf Creek Pass at 8:30. But the trail was so tough!

First, it wound uphill for miles, so it seemed. At the top the views were amazing, but then the trail got quite narrow, rocky and near the edge of a precipice. We also had to cross a scree field. I didn’t like that!
Slogging Away from Wolf Creek Pass
Eventually we got onto some more normal terrain, although it was overgrown. Not too bad. But then we got into a huge area devastated by the Rocky Mountain Pine Beetle. Dead trees were everywhere that were difficult to traverse.
As the day was winding down, we knew we’d be far off of our goal. The altitude was also bothering Ed. We’ll see if we can make up time tomorrow, or if we’ll have to extend the hike (which will entail cancelling other plans – rats).
