River flowing in small gorge.
I hoped for better trail today, so that I could stay on the Gila Middle Fork and not have to take the Gila High Route. Alas, it was not to be. First, on an early-morning water crossing I inadvertently chose a route that took me through water up to my crotch. Not good.

Later, I slipped on an underwater rock and fell in the river, soaking my tent and my sleeping quilt, plus my pants, half of my shirt and some socks I was trying to dry. The route was almost never marked or visible, so I was going just over a mile an hour (1.6 kph). I couldn’t take it any longer.

Heading for the Gila High Route

Around 1 p.m. I came across a several-mile connector that took me off the river and onto the Gila High Route. What a change! This trail was very easy to follow and mostly quite pleasant, winding through pine forest. There were two super-steep climbs, though. And, of course, no water – a welcome break.Hiking path near trees.

I’d loaded up with water before I left the Gila, although I wouldn’t hit another water stop before night, so I tried not to drink too much. I hate that!

Day Is Done

I chose a campsite about a mile before the High Route crosses the Middle Route (and water). I was pretty tired, so I didn’t want to push to the river. Plus, there were lots of good sites here and I wasn’t sure what the river area would be like.

Looks like I’ll soon be off the Gila River Alternate – thank goodness!
