Huevos rancheros in a styrofoam box.
So today’s hike to “outside Cuba” is kind of a joke. Last night I stayed at the Chaco Lodge Hacienda, a small B&B operated by Denny Herrera, the same guy who owns the Phillips66 in town. The gas station, by the way, has an enormous New Mexican food menu and has lots of accolades on Trip Advisor for serving the best huevos rancheros with green chili sauce in the state (I hope I have that description accurate).

When you stay at Chaco Lodge, your B&B breakfast is at the gas station. Ha! But the owner and his employees are super nice. Yesterday, when I made it to Cuba, I was so exhausted I didn’t want to walk the 3 miles (4.8 km) from town to the hacienda. So Denny had Fidel, one of his employees, drive me there. Fidel was working at the gas station this morning and made me my huevos rancheros. 🙂

Heading Outside of Cuba

The joke about today’s hike is that the CDT leaves Cuba NOBO on the highway that passes Nacimiento Road, where Chaco Lodge is located. When I hiked into town today for my breakfast – and then to do laundry and pick up some groceries – and then hiked back to the hacienda, I walked this small slice of the CDT twice. But it counts!

My hubby, Ed, is flying into Albuquerque today to join me for a Dog in front of hacienda.few days on the CDT. He’s shuttling me back to Silver City, where I had to bail last year due to a torn meniscus. He had flight issues and didn’t get to the hacienda until 4 p.m., so we didn’t get to Silver City until about 10 p.m. UGH! There was also this awful, twisting road we were on for an hour near the end, which was taxing, especially in the dark. And a black steer almost ran into us.

Day Is Done

Now we’re in the lovely Holiday Inn Express in Silver City. I have the same room I had last year – how bizarre! Looking forward to happy trails with Ed tomorrow.
