Last night was so miserable. I’m so over the rain! I got up at 6 a.m. and got on the trail by 7:30 a.m. Yes, once again everything was soaked. But I was really hoping to make it to the Green River Lakes Campground so I could at least have a flat place to pitch my tent.
The first few miles were magical. The trail unspooled downhill and much of it was soft dirt with few rocks. I was flying! There were a bunch of river and creek crossings, but I managed to only get my right foot wet.
A fair number of people were hiking in the opposite direction, including a group of 15 men!
Afternoon Gets Challenging
The trail got a little more challenging in the afternoon, but nothing major. There were more uphills, and the path was rather rocky in sections. Still, it was a great trail compared to the last few days!
The one annoying thing happened before noon. I decided to dry out my tent and pad, and as soon as I got everything spread out it began to rain. Grrr!
Maybe midway through the afternoon I met a lovely couple, Ryan and Lindsay Bundy from Logan, Utah. As we chatted, they mentioned they’d stayed last night in a rustic cabin a friend had rented, then couldn’t use. But the rental included tonight, and the Bundys were leaving, so would I want to use it? YES, PLEASE!
Great Views of Squaretop Mountain
When I reached the cabin, which offers great views of the iconic Squaretop Mountain, the Bundys showed me around the place, explained how it all
worked (solar lights, no water), then left me with a TON of stuff. They gave me a tortellini-and-sausage dinner, sandwiches for tomorrow, snacks, a soda and more. How kind! They refused to take a dime.
My dilemma now is what to do for the next three days until Ed arrives. I’ve got another big climb ahead of me, but I’m spooked from all of the storms. I don’t want to be at a high elevation when storms arrive!
Should I go for it or try and catch a ride farther up the trail? I’ll have to sleep on it.
